UltimateDisney.com
After popular countdowns on Disney's Animated Classics and Live Action Films, this spring UltimateDisney.com began polling for a third countdown. The focus for this was songs from Disney movies, both animated and live action. First a list of 129 nominees was devised by forum members. Then sixty-two site visitors compiled lists of their favorite Disney songs from the nominees.

Like everything about The Hunchback of Notre Dame, there's just more of an edge to this song than the typical Disney fare. There's a wonderful contrast between Frollo's harsh words of 'friendship' and Quasimodo letting loose.

The protagonist's song of hopes is done well in this uplifting and uniquely-sung number.

39) "You've Got a Friend in Me" (Toy Story)
The very first song in a Pixar film establishes the computer animation studio's belief in films with music (not musicals) and singer/songwriter Randy Newman.
Newman's unmistakable voice marks this and the two other Toy Story songs, but it is his lyrics that strike a chord. While it happens to be about a boy and his favorite toy, the song can apply to any friendship and has all the familiarity and effectiveness of the most beloved Disney anthems.

38) "When She Loved Me" (Toy Story 2)
Not unlike the last entry, this Oscar-nominated song aptly captures a toy/owner relationship. It differs by taking a more melancholy approach to growing up, something that works well with Sarah McLachlan singing.

Intended to be part of the film, "If I Never Knew You" was scrapped after test audience screenings and relegated to an end credits theme, of the pop variety performed by Jon Secada and Shanice. The scene with the original performance of the song has found new life in ABC airings which restore it. It will also find its place on the long-awaited Pocahontas Special Edition DVD, coming May 2005.

This powerful training song is a surprising success. Defying all expectations, Donnie Osmond delivers a Disney song which is inspiring and endlessly catchy. The blend of witty lyrics and an impressionable beat makes it stand out in Mulan.

101 Dalmatians may have just two songs, but "Cruella De Vil" clearly ranks up with the best. The playful lyrics and simplicity of this make it such a memorable theme.

There's an unparalleled energy to this song, and the animation which accompanies it. As Aladdin breathlessly reveals his situation, we're treated to just about the quickest and most delightful character exposition ever. It may be the finest Disney song which doesn't feel forever tied to a particular scene or movie.

33) "Something There" (Beauty and the Beast)
To take a hideous beast and make him appealing requires effort. It also requires time to allow for the transformation. And yet, in this just-over-2-minute song, we come to appreciate Beast and first see the potential for Belle and him.

Contrast that with "Prince Ali", a song which follows a transformation and marks a new, regal Aladdin. Like much of Aladdin, this number provides a showcase for Robin Williams to spin his frantic comedy. As such, we're treated to a variety of voices and the scene is aptly compared to a modern-day Thanksgiving parade.

At nearly 6 minutes, this is one of the longest songs on the Top 100 list. It is a grand, atmospheric way to open one of Disney's darker and more dramatic animated films.

The character of Genie distinguishes Aladdin from Disney's other fairy tales. With an incredibly lively performance from Robin Williams, Genie actually assumes countless personalities. Through all of them, a good-humored spirit emerges. Part of that spirit can be seen in "Friend Like Me," the energetic revelation of his great powers to his new master. There's at least a dozen different voices, all belonging to Robin Williams, who really brings the character to life with this song.

One of the most interesting traits of the free-spirited hero of J.M. Barrie's classic story is his ability to fly. The magic of Disney songs makes Peter's lessons to Wendy, John, and Michael all the more exciting and endearing. The old-fashioned chorus effectively underscores one of the most memorable scenes. Though the tale may be timeless, the film is undeniably a product of the 1950s, a decade that saw six beloved animated films come from the Disney studio.

28) "Go the Distance" (Hercules)
Uplifting and genuine, Hercules' contemplative song figures largely in the film. The catchy "Go the Distance" underscores the protagonist's dreams of heroism. And it was nominated for a Best Song Oscar.

27) "I Wan'na Be Like You" (The Jungle Book)
With this delightful number, King Louie affirms his status as "the king of the swingers." For a significant part, the song ditches lyrics and proceeds with scatting, whistling and a variety of catchy melodies. While he may be retired these days, King Louie is just about as colorful and fun as any Disney character, and Louis Prima's unmatched voice is the driving force behind this song. Of course, Baloo may have his own well-loved song, but his part of the song helps make it what it is.

Hercules is an interesting Disney film, one which manages to both poke fun at and adhere to the studio's animated film conventions. Meg sings merrily, backed by the Muses, about resisting clichèd romance. It's an atypical Disney song, and one that site members love for its uniqueness.
