That story always makes me cry my eyes out.... And it scared the hell out of me! As a really shy child, my only friends were stuffed animals, and I lived in terror that I would somehow contract scarlet fever and all of my friends would have to be burned....
But I had a really nice storybook of the Velveteen Rabbit, and the illustrations were so adorable! I really wish that I knew what happened to that book...
But yes, Disney should definitely do it!

There's some artwork from the abandonned "Swan Princess" project by Vance Gerry which was to be directed by Roger Allers before he got drafted for "The Lion King" on this blog:

He also posts a lot of sketches on that blog for a story called "The Abandonned" about a lonely boy who doesn't have anyone who loves hm or has time for him so he befriends a cat and eventually gets turned into one...

Interesting. So Disney was going to call it the Swan Princess also...

True.... I just tend to not count them, in case there's a difference between Gwythaints and proper dragons. Sure, I think the only difference is that they're Welsh (or Prydainian, I suppose) and have 2 legs instead of 4. But I always thought they were a different species or something.

Did he tell you anything about those projects?!?!?!?!?!? Spill the beans, please!!!
Nope.. just that there were a "number" of them. Why not head over to his blog and ask? I'm sure he'd welcome some new readers...

Could the Hydra from Hercules be considered as a sort-of a dragon?

No. It doesn't have anything traditionally associated with a dragon. I mean, it's large and it has a tail, but that's where the similarities end.

So is a Chinese Dragon. It's large and have a tail. They don't breath fire nor have wings like European ones

The hydra can be considered some subspecies of a dragon.[/b]

So, the dragons in the Disney universe are:

Regular Dragons:

The Reluctant Dragon (name?) from The Reluctant Dragon (1941)

Elliott from Pete's Dragon (1977)

Mushu from Mulan (1998)

Characters that Transformed into Dragons:

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone (1963)

Queen Narissa from Enchanted (2007)

Debatable Dragons:

Gwythaints from The Black Cauldron (1985)

Hydra (aka Lernaean Hydra) from Hercules (1997)

Is that it?

A hydra is definitely not a Dragon, it is a seperate creature entirely.

Oh, and the Genie becomes a dragon for less than a second in Aladdin! :P And, there's a dragon for a couple seconds in Fantasia 2000, I believe. But I don't know if those things really count.

But yeah, that's pretty much it.

That looks so interesting, reminding of Ghibli and also The Rescuers in a way. I would've love love loved that movie, but I agree with the blogposter that it was inevitable the project would die. :(

Reading earlier in this thread, I'm depressed Don Quixote, Lady in the Lake, The Velveteen Rabbit, The Emperor and the Nightingale and The Wind in the Willows didn't make it (*yet*). I also wonder what The Prince and the Pig was supposed to be about?

Also, I agree with you SuperAurora. A film about Journey to the West/Monkey would be a dream--if that's what The Monkey Prince was supposed to be based upon.

An adaptation of Andersen's "Pig Boy"/"The Swineherd"? God, I would have loved to see that as a Disney movie.

Initially, it was supposed to be a feature-length film.

But unlike the other listed Disney projects, it did eventually get made and as part of a feature (alongside The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, but the point still stands).

I don't know if its been brought up somewhere else on the forums, but I saw this thread and thought it an appropriate place to mention it: I was at the Irish premiere of Princess and the Frog yesterday and heard that King of the Elves has been shelved.

It had been brought up. It's a shame, the posted concept art for the elves (in it's own thread, I think) looked really good.

Wonderlicious wrote:I remember reading a few websites a few years ago that had information on Disney films that had been recently cancelled. I remember some of them included a film versions of Don Quixote (that was going to be made by the Brizzi brothers), and I remember there were titles such as My Peoples and A Few Good Ghosts floating around as well. I'm sure that there were a few more, but I can't remember what they were. Can anyone remember any of the other films that were in development and then shelved over at Disney?
A Few Good Ghosts?! Ha, that sounds like a PIXAR film to me, for some reason. Would have liked to have seen it though!

I was disappointed about Dumbo 2 getting canceled, but not after I heard it was going to be changed to CGI. They had a lot of ideas listed. I'm always up for the sequels in the hopes that they might be good. Sure, it's terrible when one stinks, but I love it when they're good, and I seem to have liked more than most folks.

I'd love to have seen that Search for Mickey movie, though it brings to mind two previous TV programs. There was an episode of Bonkers where he has to find a kidnapped Mickey, and there was Mickey's 60th Birthday, where everyone (including Roger Rabbit) was trying to find him because he had been put under a spell so that no one could recognize him. It would have been cool to see something new done with Basil and Dawson though! The Great Mouse Detective is perfect for sequels, yet probably will never get any since it's not one of the more popular films. I always loved it though, and I have the whole beanie set and the dog Toby too, ha. I wish they would make more films with Mickey and the gang, with some of the less seen characters popping up as well, like Donald's relatives and even Morty and Ferdie! They shouldn't all be House of Mouse style, like "The Search for Mickey" sort of would have been (by including Disney characters from various films), but it would be cool to have a few like that, as I love the crossover concept (House of Mouse was sooo cool to me!). But, it would be a cool thing they could do with direct to video, as one of the best direct to video releases was Mickey's Three Musketeers!
Yeah! me too! The Great Mouse Detective is perfect sequels to the Search for Mickey Mouse!
