Haunted Mansion’: First Reactions To Justin Simien’s Film Based On Disney Ride Praise Mix Of Horror & Humor
https://deadline.com/2023/07/haunted-ma ... 235439415/

So the reactions seem to be pretty good, so far. That's a relief to hear. I was prepared for something middling like "Jungle Cruise," but I'd be happy if this ended up being even halfway decent.

Justin Simien Says He Wouldn’t Have Directed Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Without a Black Leading Man
https://www.thewrap.com/justin-simien-h ... interview/
“My sense of Blackness is really rooted in Louisiana,” Simien told TheWrap. “That’s where my mom’s family is from. And I just felt like the version of New Orleans that I know and that I grew up with is beautiful and it’s Black. There’s something political and radical about realizing it properly in a movie like this that actually complements the ride and complements what the ride is trying to say thematically.”

Simien said that all things considered, having a Black leading man for his movie was a nonnegotiable. “I said there has to be a Black person, because this movie is set in New Orleans and New Orleans is an 85% Black town,” he explained. “I’m not telling a New Orleans story without a Black leader, I’m just not going to do it.”

But the ride is not set in New Orleans. So, why did this adaptation have to be set in New Orleans to begin with? :? Was it to justify having a Black lead and a predominantly Black ensemble?

Sorry, Sotiris, but the ride IS in the New Orleans Square "land" of Disneyland (in Anaheim, which IS the original version of the ride), and the outside of the mansion is designed to reflect that.

Well, I'm not a parks fan, so I don't know a lot about the attractions. When I was looking the ride up, I came across an article that said the mansion was largely inspired by the Shipley-Lydecker House in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sotiris, I understand you may not be that familiar with the parks. But you were questioning why the film is set in New Orleans, and it is for the very reason I just gave you.
The outside may be somewhat based on that house you mentioned, but it definitely looks like a Louisiana plantation, and has some of the ironwork that is the signature look of the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Well ... that was certainly better than the Eddie Murphy movie. Beyond that, though ... I feel like I've already forgotten it.

I guess we'll all have to meet up again another twenty years from now and see whether the third time's the charm.

I can’t believe the Eddie Murphy one was 20 years ago! I saw it in theaters. The reviews for this movie are pretty bad, but I will check it out for the references to the ride. It’s a shame that only the POTC movies have been successful because there is a lot of rich and interesting lore to be explored through Disney ride IP.

Yeah, I feel like it's a better alternative to just making animated movies into live action movies (even with my ambivalence toward this movie, I actually would say that I liked it better than most of the remakes), there have just been so few promising returns to this game.

Anyways, this did get me thinking ... anyone else remember that short fan film about the Haunted Mansion from like ten years back? "Missing in the Mansion"? It has the same affinity for easter eggs that this film marketed itself on, but it told a much more interesting story with a better sense of tone. Like ... this is the movie that Disney fans want.

I understand. But in relation to the director's comments, I think it's hypocritical that when the setting of an IP involves characters of color, Disney and Hollywood at large absolutely need to keep the same setting in every adaptation and be accurate to the racial demographics of the area, but when the setting of an IP involves white characters, they have no problem changing it entirely or if they keep it, be completely inaccurate to the racial makeup of said area or region.

I really don’t understand what the point of this film was to be honest. They wanted to make a Haunted Mansion movie that was different from the Eddie Murphy version so they went ahead and made another comedic adaptation that was poorly received by critics and audiences.

So now we’re stuck with two flop comedy adaptations. Who are these movies for?

Hey Sotiris. That is absolutely a fair point, and I agree with you. So...

I'm ok with the inclusion of black people in a film set in New Orleans. Not ok with black people in 17th century Germany hahahaha.

I saw it opening weekend.

I felt like there was very little about the movie that was actively bad, but it all just felt very market tested. Even plot elements that I should have been interested in, like LaKeith Stansfield's character being like a father surrogate to the kid (good heavens, I can't even remember the characters' names) didn't really hold my interest. I remembered being very bored the last twenty minutes of the film.

The cast all sounded super excited to be a part of the film, and that may have been genuine, but it didn't translate for a particularly enjoyable viewer experience.

I've been so busy I was going to just blind-buy it on Blu-ray. But hearing how blah it is, I might not even do that. It's interesting that Rotten Tomatoes (I know we can't always go by what reviewers say) shows 84% audience, 37% critics. Luke gave it 3.5 stars...I sadly agree with what he was getting at at the end of the review, that unfortunately a rare original Disney live-action film is doing poorly...so Disney might think we only want remakes, when maybe just this film was off. It's such a shame.
