classic comedies. The Shaggy Dog will include the color version and the original theatrical black & white

In THE SHAGGY DOG, Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) is just an ordinary teenager until a magical ring
accidentally transforms him into a lumbering sheepdog, whose owner is the leader of a plot to destroy
the U.S. Space Program! It’s a laugh-out-loud story full of slapstick chases, sight gags, hot rods, spies,
and spells, with a terrific cast. Fred MacMurray, Tim Considine, Kevin Corcoran, and Annette Funicello
(in her big-screen debut!), alongside Tommy Kirk in the title role, make THE SHAGGY DOG a timeless
comedy classic. This hilarious madcap adventure was the first live-action comedy Walt Disney
produced.

In THE SHAGGY D.A., Wilby Daniels (Dean Jones) is now an adult, with a wife and son, and he’s
running for District Attorney. What he doesn’t count on is the return of a certain magical ring, and a spell
that hounds him all over again! In this side-splitting sequel to “The Shaggy Dog,” Wilby runs afoul of the
shady incumbent District Attorney, ‘Honest John’ Slade, and his problems get worse when he’s
accidentally turned into a sheepdog again. It’s more laughs and howls as Wilby and Slade lead the

Wow, I'm surprised that Disney did put some effort into these discs! Special editions indeed!

By the way, before someone questions it, there is nothing wrong with "The Shaggy Dog" aspect ratio - it is an open mate, because the film was intended for television airings, not theaters.

I was um-ing and ah-ing about whether to pick these up or not. I assumed that the Shaggy Dog would be a SE (due to the fact it is an anniversary edition), but I never imagined Shaggy D.A. would have a SE.

I have to applaud BVHE for putting some effort into these releases. Definitely not "vault" material, but certainly more than you could possibly hope for in a Disney catalog title. Mind you, they have been getting better this year overall. Top stuff

Kenny Harris would be very happy about this.

I'm completely dumbfounded that the sequel is getting a widescreen transfer, but not the original. And no, it was not a television release. It came out in theaters in 1959. The television version came out in 1954. I'm avoding both of these DVD's, since they are not presenting the original in OAR. The correct aspect ratio is 1.75:1. They could have done it in 16x9 and called it family freindly widescreen like they do on some of the others.

Well, I definately would not call these "Special" Editions, theyu may have some bonus materials, which may be more than others, but it is definately far from being a great release (of the first one) in my opinion, I think a retrospective featurette on the legacy of the film, and the sequel it spun off, as well as the 1994 tv remake, and the remake w/ Tim Allen in production now, would be cool.... I would also really like to see the tv remake out on dvd some time... Oh well, we'll see what happens...

I look forward to seeing this, for the first time, I saw the 1994 tv remake years ago, but never the original, so that should be cool.

Hmm. I don't know about that. If that's the case, wouldn't it have chopped off people's heads in the theaters? They probably decided that it would go to theaters before it started filming, and they probably protected for theaters. If that's the case, then I want the theatrical aspect ratio. The only exception is for animated films that are animated at 1.33:1. For all live action films I think we should get theatrical aspect ratio. If that's not the intended ratio, then provide both.

It was probably protected for theatrical display anyway, because a lot of the TV movies were released in cinemas internationally.

There is always a diffrence in whats intended and what happened.

Imdb lists this film as 1.75 : 1 wich is similar to a lot of other Disney movies (it looks like Disney was one of the few to use this aspect ration).

I was just reviewing the specs on these discs and can't help but wonder, if they will be set up like the one disc special editions we got last year around that time (escape to witch mountain, apple dumpling gang, return from witch mountain). I can see the audio commentary on both as a good indicator, but also, there's just enough material to fill up the left and right side of the theater screen once you go 'down the vault' on those discs.

Once you choose to go into the vault, I'll bet this is the set up for the bonus features:

A tribute to Fred MacMurray - they always have montage stuff on one of those options

Lost Treasures - ???I've run out of bonus material, but I'm hoping that they come up with something newly discovered from the vaults???

You know what would make a good lost treasures?????? --- THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL TRAILER!!


It would be so easy to make another one disc special edition out of this one especially with the specs that we've already been given! I'm hoping that there will be more special features than what were mentioned because there should be an original theatrical cartoon that was shown with the movie (those are always fun), and advertisement and script excerpts and biographies of the filmmaker's down that flight of stairs. Those things aren't too much to ask for from Disney. I just really really want another VAULT style disc. The format is so user friendly, and I love the elevator ride down and moving through the vault........oh, I hope this is one of those discs. preferably with an easter egg of the original theatrical trailer

unfortunately, they haven't released vary many specs for the sequel at all which makes me think that they may butcher the specs that could go with that one. I'm happy to know that we are getting the special features that we are getting, but hopefully we will hear of more special features in the future......i really think that these can make great one disc special editions a la Escape to Witch Mountain.....and I KNOW that they deserve it
