CAST AND FILMMAKERS

MULAN features a stellar voice cast. Acclaimed actress Ming-Na Wen (“The Joy Luck
Club”) stars as the voice of Mulan, and is accompanied by Eddie Murphy (“The Haunted
Mansion”) as Mushu the dragon, B.D. Wong (“Jurrassic Park”) as Shang, George Takei
(“Star Trek’s” Mr. Sulu) as First Ancestor, Pat Morita (“The Karate Kid”) as the
Emperor, and Miguel Ferrer (“Traffic”) as the villainous Hun leader, Shan-Yu. Lea
Salonga (Broadway’s “Miss Saigon”) and music legend Donny Osmond contribute standout
singing performances.

MULAN is directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft, and produced by Pam Coats.
Screenplay by Rita Hsiao, Christopher Sanders, Philip LaZebnik, Raymond Singer &
Eugenia Bostwick Singer.

Based on a famous Chinese legend, MULAN chronicles the daring adventures of a young
Chinese woman whose irrepressible spirit clashes with her tradition-bound society.
Although her family wants her to marry, Mulan is comically out-of-place when it comes
to matchmaking, and she makes a hilarious mess out of her family’s plans. When her
country is forced into war by the invading Hun army, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes her
ailing father’s place in the Chinese army in order to save his life. With the hysterical
support of Mushu (Eddie Murphy), her feisty, fire-breathing, wanna-be guardian dragon,
Mulan disguises herself as a man and trains to become a brave and disciplined warrior.
With bold and selfless acts of courage, she brings victory to her country and honor to her
family.

THE MUSIC

MULAN’s original five songs were written by the talented songwriting team of Matthew
Wilder and David Zippel. Wilder’s pop sensibilities and Zippel’s witty and heartfelt
lyrics made for the perfect combination and together they helped to “musicalize” some of
the story’s most dramatic and thematic moments. Some of the songs use traditional
Chinese instrumentation such as temple flutes and drums, a gushen (a koto) and an er-hu.
All of this was processed through Wilder’s sensibilities for western music and pop to
come up with something that sounded quite unique. “Honor To Us All” is heard as
Mulan prepares to meet a matchmaker. The beautiful ballad “Reflection,” sung by Lea
Salonga, reflects Mulan’s inner desire to be herself. The entertaining “I’ll Make A Man
Out Of You” is sung by Donny Osmond, while the comical “A Girl Worth Fighting For”
is sung by Mulan’s fellow soldiers as they march. The film’s thrilling score was written
by Jerry Goldsmith, a 1977 Academy Award© winner for Best Original Score for “The
Omen,” and the recipient of 13 other Academy Award™ nominations.

Wow! This is great... It seems Disney has decided to turn to collector's again! I mean, they even announced the audio commentary and no children's games!
I'm only a bit disappointed that it seems there will be no box set... Which is weird, because Disney themselves announced it to lots of sites.

Hmmm... Interesting. 1.66:1 instead of the 1.85:1 aspect ratio of the gold collection disc. This means we get the full animation frame with no cropping. And a 5.1 Disney enhanced home theater mix... like the one that was included with The Lion King? Not bad.

Hehe... yeah Joe, I'm glad that there's no "Virtual Temple Playtime" or some shit clogging up this release!

And yeah, I'm also confused about the box set. Guess it's better to keep that as a Platinum thing, though - since a box set of Aladdin is far more likely to sell than a box set of Mulan - especially at $50 a pop. :o

Looks like quite a marked improvement from other recent 2-Disc sets! Good to see all those galleries, progression reels, demos, & deleted scenes. It's great that there's a lot to look forward to besides the chance to own the movie itself after the OOP drought.

The only possible downside is what could be the return of ultra-fragmented, mini-featurettes like those on TLK. I really enjoyed Brother Bear's 45-min segmented documentary, and I hope Mulan's featurettes are closer to that than TLK's (which really left a bad taste in my mouth).

I'm not surprised there is no Collector's gift set for this one. Releasing 2 box sets in one month would probably not sell so well.

Glad to see the cardboard sleeve is back. It is sooo important to the viewability of the discs :P

Why does this Mulan set look like a Platinum Edition? It's got so many extras, just like the Sleeping Beauty DVD last year! It feels that now Platinum Edition is not so special anymore.

I hope the publicity section includes the theatrical trailers and the TV spots.. they add something to the whole thing. They are my favorite extras and I was so disapointed by TLK. But this sounds better... this is gonna rock!

If there was going to be a Gift Set, I'm pretty sure they'd have it mentioned in the press release or listed somewhere. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'm not holding out complete hope for a Gift Set based on that one site's mention.

DVDFile and DAVISDVD mentioned a gift set. We shall have to see. October is a long way off after all.

As for the Publicity Gallery, don't assume it will include trailers. After all, the Lion King's didn't.

Well, DavisDVD often just regurgitates other's stories, so that's probably the case with this one. And we all know that DVDFile's report wasn't initially wrong in any way. ;)

I know, but didnt BatB have some not-mentioned trailers? I dont quit remember. I know BatB had them, but not if they were mentioned. If Mulan does turn out to have them.. then this is pretty exciting :)

I find it odd it's placed in the "International Mulan" section. That's all. Plus, the Lion King DVD had no trailers, but managed to give us umpteen soundtrack covers, where, as far as I can remember, the only difference were the language the Lion King was written in.

Of course, that's not to say the trailers can't be elsewhere, included in the now obligitary "and more"
