Walt Disney’s Crowning Achievement
Arrives In A Spectacular 2-Disc DVD Filled With New Bonus Features
MARY POPPINS
40th Anniversary Edition DVD
Disney’s Magical Masterpiece Is Fully Restored and Remastered,
and Available On December 14
BURBANK, Calif., August 11, 2004 - Winner of five Academy Awards®, Walt Disney’s MARY
POPPINS is one of the most beloved movies of all time. Now, Walt Disney’s crowning achievement of
live-action, animation and music, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, has been fully restored in a
very special 40th Anniversary Edition DVD.
“Practically Perfect in Every Way,” the MARY POPPINS 40th Anniversary Edition DVD is chock-full
of spectacular, all-new bonus material that has never been released before. This Disney treasure-trove
includes an all-new animated short hosted by Julie Andrews and starring the voice talent of Sarah
Ferguson, Tracy Ullman and David Ogden Stiers. Created exclusively for the DVD, the short is based on
an original Mary Poppins story by P.L. Travers, “The Cat That Looked At A King.” This magical DVD
also includes a first-ever reunion with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and co-composer Richard Sherman
as they reminisce about making the film and the music that was such a special part of its success. As
well, the exciting MARY POPPINS 40th Anniversary Edition also contains a new rendition of the
never-before-heard deleted song ‘Chimpanzoo;’ a new, definitive behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ feature
with never-before-released footage and new interviews; an all-new set-top game, “I Love To Laugh;” a
Disney Song Selection track that shows the words to your favorite songs on screen; a newly recorded
audio commentary with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke; and much, much more.
Available just in time for the holiday season, this definitive, must-have “Mary Poppins” edition for
audiences of all ages debuts December 14, 2004!
The new 2-disc DVD features both a remastered picture and remixed sound with the Disney Enhanced
Home Theater Mix. This all-new viewing experience brings the picture back to its theatrical brilliance in
the 1.66:1 aspect ratio that the film was originally created in. The extensively remixed soundtrack
uncovers dialogue previously inaudible on the original track and provides dramatic clarity and crisper
sound. By sweetening sound effects, a more realistic outdoor environment was created which was
unattainable during the film’s soundstage production. After listening to the enhanced mix, co-composer
Richard Sherman commented “Walt would be smiling.”
MARY POPPINS is one of Walt Disney’s greatest achievements, a true milestone in cinema history.
Julie Andrews won the Academy Award® for Best Actress, 1965, for her portrayal of Mary Poppins,
alongside co-star Dick Van Dyke as Bert the carefree chimney sweep. This magical tale of the
“practically perfect”’ nanny who brings cheer and happiness to the children and all around her won the
Academy Award® for Best Score, Best Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”), Best Special Visual Effects and
Best Film Editing. MARY POPPINS features the delightful sounds of the legendary Sherman Brothers,
through classic songs like “Feed The Birds,” “Spoonful of Sugar” and
“Supercalifradgilisticexpialidocious.” The MARY POPPINS 40th Anniversary Edition 2-disc Disney
DVD is available for $29.99 (SRP).

Wow, wow, wow!! What can I say? A supercalifragilisticexpicialidocious release indeed!
And I'm sooooo happy they made an EHT mix for this movie! And besides that they are even bringing us the original soundtracks!!! I won't be surprised if this turns out to be the best Disney release of the year (after On The Front Lines, of course, hehe).
Hmm, it seems Disney went to great lengths to get material from their vaults. This leaves us lots of big expectations for Bambi and Cinderella (specially the former, since the LD had so few extras). Way to go Disney!!
By the way, notice the Disney DVD logo on the banner at the top of the page!

Wow! This very well could be the most in-depth live action Disney DVD ever! Very impressive! Disney's on a roll with Aladdin and Mulan and now Mary Poppins. Here's hoping this trend of excellent releases continues for Bambi, Cinderella, and whatever live action 2-Disc is released next year (assuming there'll be one). The glory days of Disney DVD are back!
BTW, I just noticed something. Why is only Richard Sherman on this DVD and not Robert? I just looked him up on IMDb and apparently he's still alive. Is he just not well enough to participate in the supplements? _________________ Kelvin

Yeah, I noticed that too. I think his health is not in the best conditions. If you watch the brother's interviews on such recent DVDs as "Winnie the Pooh" and "Sword In The Stone", you can see that Robert hardly ever speaks. Well, a pity! |

I think he must not be in a condition to do an interview. You'll notice on all of their interviews on previous Disney DVDs, Richard does 90% of the talking. Robert chimes in once and a while, but he's mostly just sitting there. My guess is he has some sort of illness, and it may have gotten to the point where he can't do ANY interviewing anymore. |

Couldn't have said it better myself. But really "...all-new animated short ...starring the voice talent of...David Ogden Stiers" was I needed to hear.
The commentary, doco, short and trailers make this a solid special edition - the rest is just gravy really.
And finally Disney seems to have responded to the lack of original trailers complaint by providing no less than 7 different trailers. _________________ DVDBits - News, Reviews and More! | Bitcast! - My Podcast |HKDL Source - Hong Kong Disneyland Fansite | Twitter - Follow me on Twitter |

I'm really looking forward to this release! December can't come fast enough.
By the way, does anyone else think that the cover art they have posted is a little unattractive? I really think the gray on the cover is ugly... |

Oh, I'm pretty sure it is, mixed with the fact that the stage version debuts next year. Most Disney DVD's nowadays are released to promote something, plus I heard that Princess Diaries 2 is due out in December (wow, talk about a speedy DVD release). _________________ Kelvin

Well, Disney - and most other studios - tend to release a lot of their major titles in bulk, say two dates a month, rather than having 365 different release dates a year. Look at September 7 and October 5 as good examples of this!!
So I have no doubt that Disney will release a few titles on that day. December 7 & 14 seem to be their major days for that month.
And my guess is that we will see PD2 on DVD sooner rather than later

Simpley astonishing! Just as good, if not better, than SW PE! At first, it seemed rather empty, but once i hit that second disc, KAPOW! Nice to see they've included original trailers. Plus, the gala premiere! I hope there's they've included some old interviews/Disneyland USA skits with Walt talking about Mary Poppins. Too bad both Sherman Brothers won't be there though. I also can't believe Disney's gonna include a EHT on this, but I'll gladly take it!
Looks like Buena Vista DVD productions is getting back on track. First Aladdin PE on par with SW, then Mulan SE on par with the PEs, now MP AE (Anniversary Edition) also equal to a PE/Vault release.... This just blows my mind!
I can't seem but think that once we learn more about what's in the Treasures, they'll be just as great as Wave 3! I still don't know why Disney can't put the same quality into their Treasures as WB has put into their Looney Tunes Collections....
This just made my night! Here's hoping Bambi, Cinderella, Pocahontas, and Lilo all have the much quality put into their releases. My God, I just can't believe that Disney's done this, though the title certainly deserves this much attention.
I can't seem but think that the doc could've been longer though.... Yea, yea, I know, if it serves the material well..... I think I'll join MMB in that happy dance.... Wonderful Job Disney
O yea, Thanks Luke for the quick posting of the press release. _________________ My Blog
