NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
Hayao Miyazaki’s epic masterpiece! A thousand years after a great war, a seaside kingdom known as the

ABOUT HAYAO MIYAZAKI…
Hayao Miyazaki has been hailed as an “animation magician,” “a stunning visual artist” and “the
Disney of Japan.” His films are praised for their originality, dazzling animation and epic storytelling,
earning him a place as one of the premiere animators in motion picture history.

He is one of Japan’s leading filmmakers and an icon in the field of animation. His popularity
continues to grow greater and greater around the world.

Several of his films have been among his country’s top box office successes in recent years,
including “Spirited Away” (Academy Award® winner 2002 Best Animated Feature) which is the most
successful film ever to play in Japan. Many of his films have become a beloved part of Japanese popular
culture, in much the same way that Walt Disney’s work has been embraced by Americans.

Born in Tokyo in 1941, Hayao Miyazaki majored in political science and economics in college,
but chose to take a low-paying position as an animator at Toei Animation after graduation.

He was a diligent and talented employee who impressed his superior, Isao Takahata, and they
worked together in the 1960’s and 1970’s making TV animated series and animated features, with
Takahata doing the directing and Miyazaki doing the animation.

Miyazaki directed his first film “Castle of Cagliostro” in 1979. Takahata collaborated with
Miyazaki as producer of Miyazaki’s animated films “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” and “Castle in
the Sky.” Separately, Miyazaki worked on “My Neighbor Totoro” while Takahata directed the acclaimed
animated film “Grave of the Fireflies.”

Miyazaki and Takahata founded their company, Studio Ghibli, in 1985. “Kiki’s Delivery
Service” was made soon thereafter and became Studio Ghibli’s first widespread popular success and
paved the way for expansion of the studio in one large house on the edge of Tokyo.

Many of Studio Ghibli’s animated features that followed were blockbuster hits in Japan. “Pom
Poko” (directed by Takahata) and “Whisper of the Heart” (directed by Yoshifumi Kondo) were the top
domestic hits during their respective releases in Japan. “Porco Rosso” (directed by Miyazaki) was the top
film of the year among both domestic and overseas films released in Japan. The adventure tale “Princess
Mononoke” (directed by Miyazaki) became a sensation in Japan that became the #1 grossing film in
Japan of any film up to that time. “Spirited Away” (directed by Miyazaki) has since broken all box-office
records in Japan. “Spirited Away” is now Japan’s #1 film of all time, surpassing even “Titanic” and
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Miyazaki has since applied his talents to the upcoming animated
film “Howl’s Moving Castle,” which will be released November 20, 2004 in his country.

Known as a hands-on craftsman whose influence is felt in virtually every frame of his work,
Miyazaki makes films that closely reflect his tastes, interests and concerns. His beautiful animated vistas
are alive and flowing, with lifelike color and movement. His stories contain unusual characters, intricate
plots and emotional pathos rarely found in most feature animation, combining with his visual style to
create films revered throughout the world by animators, animation fans and critics alike.

Agreed, where's Totoro?! That was the Miyazaki release I was looking forward to the most. The Cat Returns isn't even a Miyazaki film, just a Studio Ghibli one. It makes more sense to release Totoro now and save Cat Return for the first wave of non-Miyazaki Ghibli films.

I'm happy to see that "The Cat Returns" is getting released because it is the only Ghibli film I haven't seen. I really feel that Disney should release "Whispers of the Heart" before "The Cat Returns".

I heard that Disney didn't want to release "Totoro" now because stores still have the Fox version in stock. They felt that most people would buy the crapy $5 version instead of the SE.

I'm really excited about seeing both of these, as they are both new to me.
I loved Mononoke and Spirited Away, although I think my favorite has to be Castle in the Sky. I love the piano music in the films, and even though I'm not always a fan of some of the casting choices for the redubs, I'm really excited about some of the voices for 'The Cat Returns...' TIM CURRY!? I think he's awesome and Cary Elwes is a pretty awesome actor too!

That makes no sense whatsoever to release The Cat Returns in place of My Neighbor Totoro. They should've released Pom Poko or Whispers of the Heart first, because The Cat Returns is technically the sequel to Whispers of the Heart.

I wouldn't start wailing yet, guys. As I've posted before at A-N here and here, the Australian home video distributor for the Studio Ghibli films, Madman Entertainment, stated that it will be releasing Ghibli in waves all throughout 2005, and should be completed before the end of that year. They said that their waves will be "the same as the U.S." - and since the U.S. just switched their first wave to be identical to Madman's (Cat Returns instead of Totoro), that claim has gained credit! They're within similar time frames, too - U.S. on Feb. 22nd, and Australia in late March.

So don't give up yet, guys! If this turns out to be true, you have less than a year to wait for the other Ghibli films on DVD... and A-N will keep you updated on all Ghibli and Miyazaki goings-on. ^_^

I want to see Nausicaa of the valley of the wind & The cat returns. They seem like good movies.
And yes! Howl's Moving Castle is coming the 20th! Woot! Been waitin since last year to know when they're gonna put that movie to theatres! looks like such a good movie. Might be strange, but interesting, non the less. I got some b-day money, so I might go see it. ^ ^

I have seen all of the Ghibli films to date! I assure you that "cat retruns" is one of their best films , miyazaki or not! Totoro will have to wait! but there is always the fox version or imports that can be easily found! As for "porco" , deffenetly one of miyazakis most skillfull films , and "Nausicaa" is just plain classic!

I cant wait for the dubbed versions , im eager to see what disney has done to these films that i loved to enjoy in japanese!!

ALL, and I mean ALL Miyazaki animated films have been released in Hong Kong as 2-Disc Special Editions. I only own My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. They are both pretty good sets (especially Spirited Away; the DTS 6.1 surround will blow you away), but I don't know their differences with the US versions.

I was kinda looking forward to My Neighbor Totoro (I've lots of rave reviews), but I'll probably blind-buy Nausicaa and Porco Rosso when they come out. Nice to see more Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki DVD releases, though.

If u want these films! you can buy a import dvd set containing all the films ( some are dubbed others are subtitled because of no us release ) Still all are fantastic . And the set goes around 70 dollars , for 14 films thats a great deal!!

I don't care for them much. They're very bland and don't really match the style of the other Ghibli covers except in their spines, which is what really matters, anyway, since that's what'll be seen when I put them on my shelf with the others.

Yeah, that's when they originally posted the news (when the titles were supposed to come in August), but this is the first time we've seen high-res versions of Nausicaa and Porco, and the first time we've seen anything for The Cat Returns. Notice how in the comments section people don't start talking about the covers until today.
