Review by Alex "MMP" Pantoja

For many years Pokémon has been popular around many young children and some teens. Pokémon was an import from Japan that made it a huge hit in the United States. In 1999 Pokémon debuted in syndication but the following year, Kids WB bought it to their new home. This isn’t the first Pokémon movie and won’t be the last. Warner Brothers has the rights of the first three pokemon movies, Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back (1999), Pokémon The Movie 2000: The Power of one (2000), and Pokémon 3 The Movie: Spell of the unknown (2001). These first three Pokémon movies were released in theaters by Warner Brothers and made a fair amount of cash but that amount decreased with each new movie. The television series had its debut on Kids WB on January 22, 2005. First Movie to not have a Pikachu Short. Pokémon just entered its 7th season in September and go renewed for an 8th season on Kids WB.

But Buena Vista Home Video and Miramax Company released the other three Pokémon sequels. The only ones to make their debut at the box office were Pokémon: 4ever: Celebi, The voice of the forest (2002) and Pokémon Heroes (2003) in a limited release, in only 200 theaters in the United States. Both these films brought in low revenue to BVHV and Miramax. A year later they released Pokémon: Jirachi, Wish Maker (2004) straight to home video and DVD.

Four years ago a major event change Earth forever. A big meteor crashes Earth that has a secret inside the meteorite. Today Ash, Pikachu, Brock, May and Max travel to Larausse city compete in a Pokémon battle. The story introduces Tony who is afraid of Pokémon and their trainers because of a freaky trauma accident. When Tony was younger a Sealeo ran over him because of Deoxys’arrival.

Then Larousse City had a different look a mysterious aurora appears and so dies Deoxys. While that happens, Rayquaza battles Deoxys for the protection of earth. It’s up to Ash and his friends to stop them from destroying Larousse City.

One year has passed since Pokémon: Jirachi wish maker debuted last year. This film is the sixth Pokémon sequel and still is popular even today. Along with all the Pokémon games and merchandise it’s still entertains young children and teenagers. But it won’t make as much as the first Pokémon movie made. Still Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys isn’t as weak as the other Pokémon movies or the television show. Maybe others prefer this movie than the television show. Pokémon are the same company and creatures that brought “Digimon: Digital Monsters” and “Yu-Gi-Oh!” to television. All three shows are popular in Japan, China, and the United States, but “Digimon: Digital Monsters” was cancelled last year due to low ratings.

VIDEO and AUDIO

Pokémon The Movie: Destiny Deoxys is presented in a 1.33:1 Fullscreen. Didn’t have enough special features and should have had better sound. This is the second Pokémon film to be direct-to-video film from the awesome series. Many fantastic scenes in the film that made the video alive due to the sound of the movie boast up the tone.

BONUS FEATURES

“Who’s that Pokémon?” tells you about the new Pokémon from the film like Rayquaza (#200), Minun (#81), Plusle (#80), Deoxys (#386) and Munchlax (# Unknown)

Gallery: Poster Art From the Japanese Film, which shows posters of the film in Japanese letters and they look better then the United States version.

On Location with the director, which tells how, the director came up with the idea of creating Larousse City. The director rides a helicopter and makes notes and sketches for the movie he created. It’s a very nice view once you’re on the helicopter.

Be a Poké-Quiz Wiz is a fair game for young children. Asks easy questions about the movie to test their knowledge and to make their Pokémon evolve.

MENUS and PACKAGING

The animated 16x9 menus start with great, fascinating graphics that show a large ball with the title of the movie and around it are the selections to click. The menu looks very nice and will attract you to the screen.

At the disc's start, trailers play for Chicken Little, The Incredibles, and Bionicle 2: Legends of Metro Nui. In the Sneak Peeks menu, one can find additional spots for Spider-man: The Venom Saga, Power Rangers: DinoThunder, Sacred Planet, and something bizarrely called Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go! on Jetix.

The four-page insert lists chapter selections and advertises Pokémon toys, cars and DVDs. Inside a blank white envelope, there is a Pokémon card of Deoxys and a mail-in certificate that will get you $4 if you already have either Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker or Pokémon Heroes.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Fans of the Pokemon show and movies won’t be disappointed with Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys. The film brings out entertaining and fun to young kids. Also the film will keep parents to have a little quite time of their own. But even adults would probably enjoy the film just as much as young children do. Also brings out new Pokémon characters for the little ones to enjoy. So just come on in to the Pokémon world.

Nice review. I saw this when it aired on TV a couple of weeks ago. There's been mentions of "never-before-seen footage" on the DVD and I was wondering what they were. Are they just scenes that weren't on the TV airing?

When Kids WB first aired Pokémon The Movie: Destiny Deoxys on January 22, 2005 some of the violent scenes were taken out of the movie since the network thought it would be to violent for the kids that were watching. But they added it in the movie when it came out on DVD and Video.

Disney Guru I will continue doing reviews okay... I'm working on two.

Very good review, MMP. I recently saw PVery HappyD on KidsWB and I liked it, i thought that it was actually better than alot of the other PKMN movies. I like how they improved the animation and made it look better. The movie itself was good too, i liked the plot and that some cool new characters were introduced. Overall, I think that they did a good job on this movie.

Well that pokemon release sucks, the original aspect ratio was widescreen. It was made for a cinematic release, at least in japan.
