The Chronological Donald,
Volume Four
Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow Destino
Disney fans will delight in "Chronological Donald, Volume 4," which includes 31 classic shorts starring Donald Duck. Each of these meticulously animated adventures was created between 1951 and 1961 and has rarely been seen. All of Donald’s CinemaScope shorts will be presented in their original widescreen aspect ratio for the first time on video. "Dr Syn, Alias the Scarecrow," which first aired as three separate episodes on Disney’s weekly TV show under the title "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh," was edited for theatrical releases in England and the U.S. This DVD set includes all three of the original TV episodes plus the theatrical version of the film that was released in England. "Destino" began in 1946 as a collaboration between Walt Disney and the famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali. A first-hand example of Disney’s interest in avant garde and experimental work in animation, "Destino" was to be awash with Dali’s iconic melting clocks, marching ants and floating eyeballs. However, "Destino" was not completed at that time. In 2003 it was rediscovered by Walt’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, who took on the challenge of bringing the creation of these two great artists to fruition. In addition to the completed "Destino," this exciting addition to the Walt Disney Treasures line also includes an all-new feature-length documentary that examines the surprising partnership between Dali and Disney plus two new featurettes; "The Disney That Almost Was," an examination of the studio’s unfinished projects; and "Encounters with Walt," which addresses the surprisingly diverse group of celebrities and artists who were attracted to Walt Disney’s early work.

Announced as one of four Disney DVDs coinciding July 2005's 50th anniversary celebrations of the Anaheim theme park, this long-delayed disc slipped on and off BVHE's radar over the past two years before settling into the resurrected Treasures line. Much to the delight of Disney Parks fans, it promises a comprehensive, never-before-seen, feature-length documentary titled Disneyland: Then, Now and Forever. According to the original specs, the movie was to be accompanied by a Wonderful World of Disneyland trivia game (with beginner and advanced levels), an introduction by anniversary ambassador Julie Andrews, extended interviews with Diane Disney-Miller and Rolly Crump, thirteen Disneyland sing-along songs, the short Disneyland U.S.A. at Radio City Music Hall, and a collectable replica of the park's original E-ticket book. During the many months this titled was shelved, the Radio City Music Hall presentation surfaced (on Your Host, Walt Disney) and the sing-along numbers were released in their original format (a vanilla DVD of 1990 VHS Sing Along Songs: Disneyland Fun). It's unlikely these will still show up here and unclear what else will be added to pad this to a two-disc set from the single-disc as which it was planned. One thing certain is that the set will include both that E-ticket book replica and a lithograph of castle concept art.

Official Studio Description: Disneyland: Secrets, Stories and Magic is a comprehensive look at the "Happiest Place on Earth." The centerpiece of this volume is a new documentary with archival footage, including Walt’s own words, as well as new interviews that reveal the magic and manpower behind one of the world’s most famous destinations.

Review

The most self-explanatory of the Wave 7 releases, this one will provide 30 shorts from 4 years in Donald Duck's voluminous series plus a couple of bonus features. The included lithograph is a reproduction of poster art for Inferior Decorator.

Official Studio Description: The Chronological Donald, Volume 3 features the most prolific of "Walt’s Fab Five," the short-tempered but hilarious Donald Duck in rarely seen solo shorts dating 1947 through 1950.

In February 2006, Disney allowed sportscaster Al Michaels to exit his contract with ABC Sports and join NBC's team of sports announcers. In exchange, the Mouse reclaimed from NBC/Universal the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney's very first cartoon star whose ownership went to Charles B. Mintz and Universal in 1929. Though twenty-six black and white Oswald shorts were produced under Walt Disney and his animator Ub Iwerks, few are known to survive today. Those that do live on are expected to be presented here in a highly-restored state.

Official Studio Description: Predating even Mickey Mouse, the legendary and rarely-seen Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney’s first big animated star, and having recently returned to the Disney fold, comes out of the vault for the first time ever on DVD. The silent shorts made from 1926 to 1927 with Walt’s personal touch, are revitalized with a brand-new score specifically made for Walt Disney Treasures, Wave VII.

From the beginning, Walt Disney's SILLY SYMPHONIES series was a mecca for innovation and unabashed creativity. This second volume of the revolutionary series boasts some of Disney's rarest cartoons, including over a dozen never before released on DVD or video. Among the many animation treasures celebrated here are the never-before-released "Hell's Bells" and the original unedited "Mother Goose Goes Hollywood", plus the Academy Award®-winning "Three Orphan Kittens" (Best Cartoon, 1935). Enriching the collection even further are several optional commentaries by some of the world's foremost animation and film music experts, who also take part in a lively conversation about the series that let Walt Disney push the envelope of animation art to unimaginable flights of fantasy. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin.

Expected to include the remaining 38 animated shorts in "Silly Symphonies" series that were not included on the first Walt Disney Treasure. A total of 75 music-oriented Silly Symphonies cartoon shorts were produced from 1929 to 1939. The first tin held 31 of these, plus six others as Easter Eggs.

Mickey's best pal Pluto continues to light up the screen as leading dog in more of his adventure-filled cartoons. Putting the spotlight on his comical antics from 1947 through 1951, this volume includes the inspired "Bone Bandit" of 1948 and the 1951 classic "Plutopia." The treats continue with three rarely-seen shorts featuring Pluto's feline nemesis Figaro, and a revealing exploration of a classic Pluto short. Plus, contemporary Disney master animators discuss their favorite Pluto moments and the art and craft behind them. It's no wonder Mickey's faithful pup became top dog around the world. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin.

Shorts: Figaro & Cleo (1943); Mail Dog, Pluto's Blue Note, Rescue Dog (1947); Bone Bandit, Pluto's Purchase, Cat Nap Pluto, Pluto's Fledgling (1948); Bubble Bee, Pluto's Surprise Package, Pluto's Sweater, Pueblo Pluto, Sheep Dog (1949); Camp Dog, Food for Feudin', Pests of the West, Pluto and the Gopher, Pluto's Heart Throb, Primitive Pluto, Puss Cafe, Wonder Dog (1950); Cold Storage, Plutopia, Cold Turkey (1951).

Here is a wonderful chapter in the fabled "Disneyland" TV show, hosted by Walt himself. This famous television series has something for every Disney fan. Included here is the complete Fourth Anniversary episode of Walt’s show, a wonderful surprise party by the Mouseketeers, and a 10th anniversary special program on the Disneyland Imagineers, creating some of Disneyland’s most famous attractions such as Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Programs: "Where Do Stories Come From?" (1956), "Fourth Anniversary Show" (1957), "Kodak Presents Disneyland '59" (1959), "Backstage Party" (1961), "Disneyland Tenth Anniversary Show" (1965)

This fascinating volume features some of Walt’s most unique animated triumphs. Included are several of Walt’s "The Alice Comedies," a pioneering series of early short films that combined live-action and animation. These wonderful, lesser-known unique films pre-date much of the work that would make him world-famous. This short film established a completely new animation style for the Studio. "The Adventures of Spin and Marty" ran on Walt’s original The Mickey Mouse Club television program. This beloved series follows two boys who meet at a summer boys ranch and share adventures together. Marty Markham (David Stollery) is a wealthy city kid who meets Spin Evans (Tim Considine), the most popular camper from the previous summer. The two don’t get along at first, but over twenty-five exciting episodes and many escapades, the boys become friends. The series also starred Harry Carey, Jr., Roy Barcroft and J. Pat O’Malley.

Following this popular introductory serial, the second and third Mickey Mouse Club seasons brought "Further Adventures of Spin and Marty" and "The New Adventures of Spin and Marthy" in the late 1950s, but neither of those will be presented in this set.

The Complete First Year (1955-56) contains 25 episodes: Tragedy, Perkins' Decision, The Triple R, The Misfit, White Stallion, Froggy Day, The Battle, A Surprise Decision, Homesick, Logan's Lesson, The Chase, The Secret Ride, Ride 'Em Cowboy, The Snipe Hunt, Sky Rocket's Trick, The Last Campfire, Tossing the Calf, Rope Artist, Nothing Happens on a Sunday, Perkins and the Bear, The Runaway, Haunted Valley, The Live Ghost, The Big Rodeo, Off on the Wrong Foot

Bonus features:
- the complete Mickey Mouse Club episode that introduced the serial
- Tim Considine's screen test
- "Return to the Triple R" where Considine and Stollery give an exclusive interview and tour the original ranch filming location
- "Back in the Saddle with Harry Carey Jr." interview featurette

Inspired by true life heroes, these are two of Walt’s most exciting television shows, ELFEGO BACA and THE SWAMP FOX. Elfego Baca is a late-19th century gunfighter (Robert Loggia) in the old west who changes his ways to become sheriff and then a lawyer. Elfego deals with rampaging cowboys, outlaws and more in this exciting series about law and order on the frontier. The Swamp Fox stars Leslie Nielsen (who starred in the classic film "Forbidden Planet," and would later become famous for the "Airplane" and "Naked Gun" movies) as Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. This patriot fought the British using unusual methods, and became known as "The Swamp Fox."In this superb series, Marion matches wits with the Tories in a story of adventure and action.

Episodes:
Elfego Baca: Nine Lives of Elfego Baca, Four Down and Five Lives to Go, Attorney at Law (1958-59)
The Swamp Fox: Birth of the Swamp Fox, Brother Against Brother, Tory Vengeance (1959-60)

Bonus features:
- interview with Robert Loggia (Elfego Baca star)
- "Tales of Courage and Adventure" featurette on real life historical figures

Rediscover one of the most popular family shows on television – the Mickey Mouse Club! A visionary show that sparked a renaissance in children’s programming, the Mickey Mouse Club has never been a part of the Treasures Collection before. Here are the famous Mouseketeers, the mouse-ear hats, the music, the skits, and more. The DVD programs are presented as the show was, with Monday’s Fun With Music Day, Tuesday’s Guest Star Day, Wednesday’s Anything Can Happen Day, Thursday’s Circus Day and Friday’s Talent Round-Up Day. Bonus materials include a retrospective with film historian Leonard Maltin and the original Mousketeers; merchandising and publicity materials, and much more.

To make up the gang of Mouseketeers, Walt Disney and his producers searched not for child actors, but for ordinary kids with a bit of flair. The original "Mickey Mouse Club" cast included leader Jimmie Dodd, Sharon Baird, Bobby Burgess, Lonnie Burr, Tommy Cole, Annette Funicello, Darlene Gillespie, Cubby O'Brien, Karen Pendleton, Doreen Tracy, and Roy Williams (the "Big Mouseketeer").

A staple of the early years of television, "The Mickey Mouse Club" offered a variety of entertainment to its devoted audience: classic Disney cartoons, serials, guest stars, singing and dancing. This Walt Disney Treasure set presents the first five hour-long episodes of the show, from the week of October 3-7, 1955.

It was 1934 when the irascible Donald Duck came to life in a teeny bit of a part in "The Wise Little Hen" and proceeded to steal the show. Now for the first time, you can enjoy the Donald in all of his solo starring shorts from "Donald And Pluto" in 1936 to "Chef Donald" in 1941. On December 8, 1941, the Disney Studio was taken over by the military as part of the war effort. Released theatrically in 1943, this powerful propaganda film has never been reissued until now. You'll also see recently discovered on-the-set footage, and get rare firsthand accounts about the work and culture at the Disney Studio in interviews with Disney Legends Joe Grant, John Hench, and Roy Disney. Walt Disney was a true visionary, and his most far-reaching vision examined the future. During the 1950s, his investigation into space exploration and the wondrous opportunities and challenges of space travel not only came alive in several Disneyland TV shows, but helped create strong public support for The United States space program. Go back in time to the beginning of the future and enjoy four episodes and a theatrical short that delve into the mysteries of the universe and space travel -- "Man In Space," "Man And The Moon," "Mars And Beyond," "Eyes In Outer Space," and "Our Friend The Atom." You'll also get a rare look at Walt's last film, "EPCOT," in which he reveals his concepts and plans for the Disney World and EPCOT projects. Other not-to-be-missed features include a special interview with noted futurist and author Ray Bradbury. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin.
