Both playing with and adhering to convention, this witty, imaginative movie offers enough fun to consider it one of last year's best. Among the many winning things found here are songs from '90s Renaissance composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, a wicked villain (Susan Sarandon's Queen Narissa), an amusing prince (James Marsden), allusions to classic Disney, cameos by Disney Princess voices, and a clever clash of fantasy and reality. It loses one major bonus from the film's original 1999 DVD, but adds many, including production-time featurettes, a new retrospective with Williams and director Chris Columbus, make-up test footage, alternate improvised takes, three photo galleries, and an Easter Egg.
