The Diving Bell and the Butterfly DVD Review

This acclaimed and decorated French-language drama tells the incredible true story of a healthy middle-aged man who suddenly becomes paralyzed head to toe. Able to blink just one eye, he struggles to communicate and recover, while we share his perspective and an active mind livened with flashbacks and fantasies. The disc provides two featurettes, PBS host Charlie Rose's 20-minute interview of director Julian Schnabel, and an audio commentary.

Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros: Classic Caballeros Collection DVD Review

This 2-movie DVD pairs up Disney's first two anthology films of the 1940s, which incorporate Latin American culture into a number of animated and live-action sequences. Appearing here are Donald Duck, Goofy, Walt Disney and his staff, and newly-created personalities Joe Carioca and Panchito. On the low-priced disc, the two features are accompanied by the 33-minute travelogue "South of the Border with Disney", a short Walt Disney interview excerpt, and two bonus Donald cartoons. We compare the new release to the discontinued Gold Collection versions.

Cloverfield DVD Review

The virally-marketed, J.J. Abrams-produced film offers an effective, contemporary spin on the monster movie with a character handheld video perspective reminiscent of "The Blair Witch Project". Twentysomething friends gathered at a going away party have their night shaken when mysterious disaster threatens Manhattan. Paramount's DVD satisfies with two big featurettes, a commentary by director Matt Reeves, outtakes, deleted scenes, alternate endings, and more. In addition, we shed light on eleven Easter eggs not easily found.

The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep DVD Review

Columbia Pictures and Walden Media's recent fantasy centers on a boy and the unique sea monster he befriends in 1940s Scotland. Jay Russell ("My Dog Skip") directs the PG-rated film, which is adapted from a book by Dick King-Smith ("Babe"), stars Alex Etel, Emily Watson, and Ben Chaplin, and features visual effects from Weta. Available next Tuesday, Sony's 2-Disc Special Edition provides the film in dual screen formats plus eight deleted scenes and six featurettes that total 77 minutes.

The Chipmunk Adventure: Special Edition DVD + CD Review

How special you consider it depends on whether or not you own the studio's 2006 DVD. It is repackaged alongside the full 11-song soundtrack at a modest list price. The film, released theatrically in 1987, offers a good time with Chipmunks and Chipettes music and round-the-world travel.

Alvin and the Chipmunks Go to the Movies: Funny, We Shrunk the Adults DVD Review

Timed to arrive alongside Fox's blockbuster live-action/CGI feature film, Paramount releases a pair of discs from the 50-year-old franchise's 1980s heyday. This review looks at the disc which serves up three episodes from the animated 1990 series "The Chipmunks Go to the Movies" (which some call an eighth season of the Emmy-nominated "Alvin and the Chipmunks"). The increasingly fun episodes are inspired by the hit '80s comedies "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids", "Big", and "Back to the Future".

Juno DVD Review (2-Disc Special Edition)

A recent Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, this PG-13-rated dramedy comes to Blu-ray and two different DVD editions in the middle of April. Our article covers a screener that houses all the two-disc Special Edition's bonus features. Ellen Page stars as the sarcastic, eponymous teenager who becomes pregnant and looks to give her baby over to an affluent adoptive couple (Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman). There's plenty of reason this quirky independent film has found unusual critical and mainstream success with numerous awards and a record-setting gross.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street DVD Review (2-Disc Special Edition)

Tim Burton proves to be the perfect match for the dark, ironic Stephen Sondheim musical. Inspired direction, a potent performance by Johnny Depp, and solid renditions of Sondheim's fine songs all add up to a "thrilling, funny, and exceedingly clever" film which ranks among "Burton's very best." The review covers DreamWorks' 2-Disc Special Edition which provides over two hours of exclusive featurettes and some snazzy packaging.

UD's Interview with "National Treasure" Director Jon Turteltaub

Turteltaub has directed 8 major films over the past two decades, all at Disney branches. His career of surprise hits began with the sequel-spawning "3 Ninjas" and continued with bobsledding comedy "Cool Runnings", Sandra Bullock's "While You Were Sleeping", "Phenomenon" with John Travolta, and "The Kid" starring Bruce Willis. Turteltaub's biggest and most recent successes have come in the helm of the blockbuster adventure "National Treasure" and its sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets". With "Secrets"' DVD release approaching, Turteltaub took out an hour to discuss with UltimateDisney.com and other global online outlets the changing family film, the many elements of making a big budget film, a third "National Treasure" installment, his upcoming live-action "Sorcerer's Apprentice" remake, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and much more. You definitely won't want to miss what is probably the first interview to contain both "grilled cheese sandwich" and "huge pipe of crack" in the same sentence.

There Will Be Blood: 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD Review

The fifth feature film from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, this turn-of-the-century drama follows an oil man and his young adopted son to small-town California. That synopsis can't do justice to the supremely crafted character study which soars on the Oscar-winning performance of star Daniel Day-Lewis. Paramount's 2-Disc Collector's Edition scores points for inspired packaging, but its light supply of supplements clocks in at under an hour and says little. Both the movie and our review warrant a look.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth DVD Review

Christopher Disher reviews the recently-released first of two direct-to-video MGM movies that follow the all-time longest-running American science fiction TV show. He provides a series fan's point of view, which you'll need to have to appreciate this inconclusive, plot-recycling feature. The DVD serves up a 9-minute prelude to prime those not caught up on the latter seasons' Ori plot line, an audio commentary, a making-of featurette, and a Comic-Con panel discussion.

In the Valley of Elah DVD Review

This 2007 drama represents Paul Haggis' directorial follow-up to his 2005 Oscar winner "Crash". Tommy Lee Jones stars as a Vietnam vet joining police and military in a search for answers to his Iraq veteran son's disappearance. Fellow Oscar winners Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon head a cast of familiar faces, but Jones carries the film with his nominated performance. Warner's DVD supplies a deleted subplot and a solid 43-minute documentary which interviews cast members and the family whose real story inspired the film.

Bee Movie DVD Review (A Very Jerry 2-Disc Edition)

Making a return to the entertainment scene, Jerry Seinfeld wrote and produced this newest computer-animated comedy from DreamWorks. He also stars as Barry B. Benson, a talking honey bee who has trouble picking a job after graduating college. He befriends a New York City woman (voiced by Renee Zellweger) and decides to sue humans for selling honey. Though a clear product of the studio known for pop culture references, celebrity voice casting, and adult-oriented humor, "Bee" is witty and fun. Our review covers the film's Very Jerry 2-Disc Edition, which delivers some exciting things absent on the standard single-disc release -- including deleted scenes, alternate endings, an audio commentary, and the TV Juniors interstitials that dominated NBC last fall -- but will set you back a few dollars more.

Set in 1980 West Texas, the film provides three perspectives on one chase; after a simple welder (Josh Brolin) picks up a big bundle of cash from a drug deal gone wrong, a ruthless assassin (Oscar winner Javier Bardem) and a calloused sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) both take interest in his moves.
Enchanted DVD Review

This succcessful 2007 fantasy-comedy leans heavily on Disney's long tradition of animated fairy tales. After ten minutes of 2D animation, it transports princess-to-be Giselle (Amy Adams) into present-day New York City, where she is taken in by a divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) and his young daughter. Both playing with and adhering to convention, this witty, imaginative movie offers enough fun to consider it one of last year's best. Among the many winning things found here are songs from '90s Renaissance composers Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, a wicked villain (Susan Sarandon's Queen Narissa), an amusing prince (James Marsden), allusions to classic Disney, cameos by Disney Princess voices, and a clever clash of fantasy and reality. The DVD scores high marks for picture and sound (there's even a DTS track), but is less worthy of praise in the supplements department. Our thorough critique includes information on Easter Eggs and more than a dozen screencaps.

Mrs. Doubtfire: Behind-the-Seams Edition DVD Review

This 1993 comedy blockbuster still heartily entertains today with its sharp story of a divorced father (Robin Williams) who goes to extreme lengths to be able to spend time with his three kids. Williams makes the most of the material and he's aided by a fine supporting cast which includes Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan. This new edition adds 16x9 enhancement to the feature and over a half-hour of deleted scenes. It loses one major bonus from the film's original 1999 DVD, but adds many, including production-time featurettes, a new retrospective with Williams and director Chris Columbus, make-up test footage, alternate improvised takes, three photo galleries, and an Easter Egg. The DVD checks in at a low price and you'll save even more if you intend to use the movie ticket for "Horton Hears a Who!"

UD's Exclusive Interview with Lisa Davis, Voice and Reference Model for 101 Dalmatians' Anita

The English actress first came to America to play another Disney heroine, none other than Alice of Wonderland fame, before Walt Disney nixed his idea to mix live-action with animation. Davis was then to play Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil before she suggested to Walt he had cast the part wrong. Davis, who has also performed in an assortment of live-action television and film, discusses her experiences on the movie, working with Walt, the parts that never were, and her family and dogs.

101 Dalmatians: Platinum Edition DVD Review

The 1961 canine comedy is much more down to earth than its Silver Age brethren, but that doesn't prevent it from being one of the studio's all-time great animated features. The tale of dozens of stolen puppies still excites with gentle humor, an appealing story, and the wretched villain Cruella De Vil. The two-disc set merits much praise for the fine picture and sound afforded this nearly 50-year-old film and though the bonus features are light for the movie having been out of print for nearly a decade, they include some fine inclusions such as two informative fact tracks, a host of trailers from over the years, a half-hour of deleted songs and demos, the obligatory Virtual Dalmatian activity, and three solid featurettes. Read our full 2-page review for a complete assessment and look for much more "101 Dalmatians" coverage in the hours and days ahead!

The Darjeeling Limited DVD Review

Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman play estranged brothers who unite to take a train ride across India as a spiritual journey in this fifth and latest feature film from offbeat writer-director Wes Anderson. Despite leaving Touchstone for Fox Searchlight, Anderson's distinct, quirky style remains intact and the R-rated comedy/drama hits most of its marks.

The Easter Bunny is Comin' to Town: Deluxe Edition DVD Review

One of Rankin/Bass's less famous stop-motion works, this 1977 TV special follows the pattern set by "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town", complete with Fred Astaire as singer/storyteller, to explain how the holiday's traditions came to be. It tells of two communities on opposite sides of Big Rock Mountain, Kidville and Town, and the affect that Sunny the Easter Bunny has on each.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection (15 Winners, 26 Nominees) DVD Review

The recently-released 3-disc set holds 41 Oscar-nominated cartoon shorts. MGM's Tom and Jerry claim the most time with 13 shorts, but the lineup also includes Looney Tunes (most prominently, Bugs Bunny, Tweety and Sylvester), Popeye, Superman, and an array of one-off works from the likes of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. For bonus materials, there are 14 audio commentaries, 6 music-only tracks, the Bugs Bunny short "What's Cookin' Doc?" (which is set at the Oscars ceremony), and, most remarkably, a fantastic new hour-long documentary on the history of the animated short. Casual animation fans and serious collectors should both take notice of this fine set which, in spite of a few shortcomings, provides hours of enjoyment and some medium milestones.
